Today, I’m diving into the world of NCIS Origins, specifically focusing on the

emotional flashback featuring young Mike Franks and Jethro Gibbs.

This new project has stirred up a mix of excitement and concern among fans, including myself.

For the first time, we get to see young Mike Franks and young Larry Jethro Gibbs together,

a glimpse that the set image of NCIS Origins recently revealed. It’s a significant moment, especially since it’s happening a few years after Mark Harmon, who played Gibbs in the main NCIS series, stepped away from the show. Harmon is not completely gone, though. He returns to the prequel as the narrator and executive producer. CBS has stated that the idea for this prequel series came from Harmon’s own input, which is promising, given his deep connection to the character.

The success of “Young Sheldon,” a show with a similar premise, likely influenced the green light for NCIS Origins. From both a business and creative perspective, it makes sense for CBS to capitalize on Gibbs’ enduring popularity.

Although the flagship series has moved on from Harmon’s character, Gibbs remains an iconic figure. The 90s-set NCIS Origins aims to satisfy fans’ ongoing interest in him.

However, creating a prequel is risky, especially since young Gibbs has been recast with Austin Stowell. Kyle Schmid will play the young version of another familiar NCIS character, Mike Franks.

The success of this prequel will largely depend on these new actors. Behind-the-scenes content has started to surface, giving fans a sneak peek at what to expect. This is exciting, but it also makes me nervous about how the production is progressing, especially with the release date approaching.

Thanks to a series of Instagram posts from Mario Molino, who plays a new character, Special Agent Lala Dominguez, we got our first look at Schmid as young Franks and Stowell as young Gibbs.

While Schmid looks incredible as the younger Franks, exuding the same easy and confident energy, I’m concerned about Stowell’s portrayal of Gibbs. Harmon’s Gibbs was central to the main series for nearly two decades, and capturing his essence is no small feat.

There’s still work to be done to ensure that Stowell’s young Gibbs resonates with the same vibe as Harmon’s character. Despite the challenges, it’s only fair to reserve judgment until the show airs. However, the prequel’s initial promotional image of Stowell with an incorrect haircut—a quasi-mullet instead of the short, clean cut typical of Marine Gibbs—didn’t inspire confidence. Thankfully, recent behind-the-scenes images show Stowell with a much shorter haircut, which is a step in the right direction.

Stowell’s recasting was inevitable to portray a younger Gibbs accurately. For NCIS Origins to succeed, they must ensure Stowell resembles Harmon as closely as possible, which includes matching wardrobe and grooming to the established look of Gibbs in the 90s. Moreover, capturing Gibbs’ overall vibe is crucial. Schmid mentioned that Watson has been particularly helpful in preparing him to play young Franks, and it shows in his performance. Similarly, Harmon’s involvement in NCIS Origins should facilitate Stowell’s understanding and portrayal of Gibbs.

In conclusion, while the NCIS Origins project is fraught with risks and challenges, there are ways to mitigate them and make the most out of the situation. Ensuring that Stowell physically and energetically embodies the younger version of Gibbs is paramount.
