Emmerdale star James Hooton, who portrays Sam Dingle, was visibly emotional during his appearance on “Loose Women” on July 10th, as he discussed the death of his co-star, Steve Halliwell. Steve, who played the iconic character Zack Dingle from 1994 to 2023, passed away in December at the age of 77 after a prolonged illness.
During the interview, James shared heartfelt memories of Steve and revealed that Emmerdale will be filming scenes to give Zack Dingle an on-screen farewell. He expressed the cast’s deep respect and affection for Steve, saying, “It’s going to be a really respectful passing of a truly iconic Emmerdale character.”
James became emotional while recounting the impact of Steve’s death on the cast and crew. Host Christine Lampard noted the profound loss felt by everyone involved with the show, to which James responded, “Absolutely, he was a good friend of mine.”
Steve Halliwell’s family released a statement following his death, describing him as “the most amazing father and grandfather you could ever wish for,” and thanking the staff at St. James Hospital and Wheatfield Hospice for their care during his final days. Emmerdale also paid tribute, stating, “Steve will forever be synonymous with Emmerdale, the proud defender and head of the Dingle family.”
Steve’s portrayal of Zack Dingle left an indelible mark on the show, with memorable storylines such as the birth of his daughter Belle, his involvement in the attack on Kane Dingle, and the tragic death of his son Butch in a bus crash. His relationship with on-screen wife Lisa, played by Jane Cox, was beloved by fans and earned critical acclaim. Following Lisa’s death in 2019 and the COVID-19 pandemic, Zack appeared sporadically, with Steve’s final scenes airing in June last year.
James Hooton and the Emmerdale cast will continue to honor Steve Halliwell’s legacy as they prepare to film the touching tribute to Zack Dingle, ensuring his memory lives on in the hearts of fans and the fabric of the show.
