EASTENDERS PREVIEW: BEN MITCHELL ACTOR REUNITES WITH BBC SOAP CO-STAR MONTHS AFTER EXIT
After taking a step back from EastEnders, Max Bowden was caught cheering England on with former co-star Jamie Borthwick – but could the pair be preparing for his soap return?
The pair of actors have starred in plenty of scenes on the BBC One soap but this Sunday, July 14, they were reunited in their common passion for football as the Three Lions faced Spain during the final showdown of the Euro 2024 tournament, marking the soap stars’ first reunion since Max’s EastEnders exit.
Taking to his Instagram story, the former Ben Mitchell actor shared a selfie in which he appeared sporting a white T-shirt, all smiles next to the Jay Brown star who had opted for an England football shirt. “Come on England”, he penned as a caption.

Max Bowden first rocked up in Walford as the son of Albert Square tough man Phil Mitchell in 2019, taking over the role from Harry Reid. Jamie Borthwick, on the other hand, has been a familiar face on the programme since 2006.
The actor’s portrayal of the troubled and murderous Ben Mitchell earned him the Soap Superstar of the Year Award at the Inside Soap Awards last year. But his time on the long-running show was cut short when it was announced he had thrown in the towel.
Back in December, 2023, a representative for the show said: “Max will be leaving EastEnders next year. We wish him all the best for the future.”
In February, one cast member then revealed Max was no longer filming, and his exit storyline involved his on-screen alter ego was caught up by the police for international fraud. Ben Mitchell has since been thrown behind bars over in the United States.
Over on Instagram, Max had addressed a heartfelt goodbye message as he geared up for his final scenes, which were aired in early April, 2024.
“It’s been one hell of a ride! Thanks for taking Ben to your hearts and allowing my version into your lives. I had an amazing five years at @bbceastenders and learnt a hell of a lot about myself and the craft I love so dearly; it got me through some very hard personal times and I will be forever grateful,” he wrote.
And while the Mitchell family is facing considerable challenges on our screens, Max Bowden announced he was leaving the small screen behind to take to the stage as Jack Firebrace in an adaption of Sebastian Faulks’ war novel Birdsong, making an imminent soap return unlikely.
