At a press event in April, Emmerdale producer Laura Shaw discussed the storyline’s impact. “What we really wanted to show with this story is the stress and strain a long-term illness like this can put on a family,” Shaw said. “We’ll see how the roles of Dawn and Billy change almost overnight and the effect it has on Lucas and Clemmie and the sibling dynamics. This will also impact Billy and Dawn’s relationship, their wider family, Kim, Will, and all their friends. Additionally, there’s the financial pressure of caring for a child with a long-term illness, which will be a major part of the story going forward.”
