This article contains spoilers for Monday’s (July 22) EastEnders, which has not yet aired on TV but is available to watch now on BBC iPlayer.
It’s good news for one couple in EastEnders this week, as a show legend has confirmed that she is pregnant.
Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy) and Reiss Colwell (Jonny Freeman) have been trying to conceive through IVF for several months now, after Reiss revealed that he couldn’t conceive naturally.
Their last attempt ended in heartbreak when Sonia learnt that she had a blighted ovum, which meant that the egg hadn’t developed into a foetus.
Despite the heartbreak, Sonia and Reiss were determined to try again.
In more recent scenes, Sonia confided in Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth) that she thought she might be pregnant, but she was too scared of being disappointed to take the test.
Kathy asked what Sonia the nurse would advise, and when she admitted that it would be better to know either way, Kathy offered to support her as she took the test.
As they waited for the results, Sonia confided in Kathy that she thought the unsuccessful IVF had been a punishment for her giving daughter Bex away after her birth.
Viewers will remember that Sonia had no idea she was pregnant when she gave birth to Bex in 2000, and gave her up for adoption shortly afterwards, before later fighting to get her back.
Kathy was quick to point out that she had done nothing wrong by putting her up for adoption, given that Sonia was still a child herself when she had her. She also compared it to her own situation after giving birth to daughter Donna at 14-years-old.
With Kathy having assured her, Sonia felt much better, and soon got the result she was hoping for: She was pregnant.

However, her good mood didn’t last long, as Reiss had some news of his own.
Having come back from visiting wife Debbie, Reiss finally came clean to Sonia about the extent of their debts, leaving her completely horrified.
Desperate to fix the situation, Reiss decided to go ahead with his plan to scam Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean). Will everything work out, or is he set to get caught?
