Rice Colwell (Johnny Freeman), an accountant, has been overwhelmed in recent months with money troubles after falling behind on his wife Debbie’s care home bills. Debbie had been in a coma after suffering a stroke in the bath, and with his partner Sonia (Natalie Cassidy) pregnant, Rice felt the pressure even more. Last week, he resorted to horrifying measures by murdering Debbie.

Rice has also fleeced Sharon Watts (Leticia Dean) and Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) out of thousands of pounds by concocting a lie about a fake investment scheme for their business. Sharon believed him, but during Monday’s episode (July 29), released early on iPlayer, Rice was confronted by Phil, demanding to see his money. Rice told Phil he wasn’t in the headspace to talk business.

Morbid Visit

Later, Rice was informed by the police that Debbie’s postmortem had been carried out and that he could visit her in the mortuary. During his visit, an emotional Rice spoke to a lifeless Debbie, convincing himself he had done her a favor as she had no quality of life. However, things took a harrowing turn when he committed yet another crime by removing her engagement ring from her finger and shoving it into his pocket before swiftly leaving the room.

Fan Outrage

Fans were livid at Rice for stealing Debbie’s engagement ring. One fuming viewer wrote on a Facebook fan page, “So Rice is that much of a lowlife he stole Debbie’s engagement ring.” Another replied, “He’s desperate; everything’s getting to him now. It was hard to watch, though, and what an actor—he plays the part so well, I must say.”
